Overview
Failing a credit-report identity check can feel like being refused credit before you have even applied. But a service declining to release personal information online is a different decision from a lender assessing a loan.
The agency needs to establish that the person asking for the file is entitled to receive it. When the automated route cannot do that, the next step is its alternative verification process.
Quick Answer (Read This First)
Check the details you entered, then use the credit reference agency's official support or paper statutory-report route. Do not guess different personal details to get past the check. A failed online request does not by itself tell you that your credit score is poor or that a lender will decline you.
TransUnion explicitly directs people whose online statutory-report request fails to a paper application, which is processed manually and may require further identification. TransUnion statutory-report FAQs.
Check the Information You Supplied
Review your name, date of birth, current address and requested address history. Look for straightforward errors such as a missing flat number or a move-in date entered into the wrong field.
Use your genuine details. If you have changed your name or live in a newly built property, explain the situation to support rather than trying several inconsistent versions. Keep a note of the wording of the error and when it appeared.
Experian explains that address formatting can interfere with matching and that new properties may need their address records checked. Experian: address and credit-file issues.
This is a diagnostic step, not proof of the cause. An agency may use several security checks and may not disclose the detail behind an automated result.
Go Directly to the Agency
A budgeting app or credit-score service may have its own registration process. If access fails there, find out which agency supplies the underlying report and use that agency's statutory-report service.
| Agency | Official access route | What to do if verification blocks access |
|---|---|---|
| Experian | Free statutory report online or by post | Follow its request for additional information or use its application form |
| Equifax | Free statutory report through its statutory-report service | Use the support and alternative application details provided by Equifax |
| TransUnion | Online statutory report or a paper request | Its FAQ directs unsuccessful online applicants to the manually processed paper route |
These are the three agencies most often encountered in consumer credit apps. MoneyHelper also identifies Crediva among UK credit reference agencies. Different agencies can hold different information, so successfully accessing one file does not establish what another contains. MoneyHelper: checking credit reports.
Our statutory credit report guide provides the wider background to the main services.
Follow the Alternative Verification Instructions
Download forms and obtain postal addresses from the current official agency website. Avoid copying an old address from a forum or sending identity documents to an unverified support account.
Experian says a postal statutory report usually arrives within seven working days, but it can take longer if extra information is needed to verify identity. Treat that as its published normal service time, not a guarantee where documents are outstanding. Experian: statutory report.
TransUnion's paper application says the report is posted to the applicant's current residential address after identity checks. It may request additional evidence of residence. A request to post it somewhere else can therefore require a different discussion with the agency rather than a simple delivery preference. TransUnion application form.
Ask which documents are accepted and how to supply them securely. A valid passport alone may not answer an address question, while an address document may not resolve a name mismatch. Supply the evidence requested for the problem being investigated.
Keep Access Problems Separate From Report Errors
Until you have seen the file, you may not know whether it contains an error. First obtain access; then inspect the addresses, accounts and payment history.
For example, someone who recently moved may fail online verification and later receive a report showing an old account at the correct previous address. That historical address is not automatically wrong. The question is whether the report properly connects the person's genuine history.
If an account is not yours, or a payment is inaccurately recorded, raise a specific dispute after obtaining the relevant entry. Our default correction guide explains how to assemble evidence without relying on the overall score.
If Support Does Not Resolve Access
Keep your application reference, dates and copies of the agency's requests. Ask it to explain what remains necessary to verify you and provide a formal complaint route if the process stalls.
The ICO explains access to credit-reference information and the responsibilities of agencies and data suppliers. You do not need to buy a monthly credit-monitoring subscription simply to exercise your statutory access rights. ICO: credit information.
